Health Sqyre Editors' Rating

The Good  /  The Icon Auto CPAP with heated humidifier and hose is a smart auto CPAP machine equipped with features like ThermoSmart Technology, SensAwake responsive pressure relief, and data communication to make your CPAP experience comfortable and comprehensive.

The Bad  / The Icon doesn’t have Bluetooth connectivity, is heavier than most other CPAP machines, and consumes water faster. Also, it always has to be plugged into the wall and doesn’t have the sleekest design.

The Bottom Line  /  If you want bang for your buck, the Icon Auto CPAP is a good choice. However, there are other auto CPAP machines that have more advanced features, such as more accurate data tracking.

The Icon Auto CPAP, which is an upgraded version of the Fisher & Paykels SleepStyle 200 Auto Series, is equipped with the most essential features that any CPAP user needs to have a comfortable experience. Some of these features include Auto Algorithm, ThermoSmart Heated Hose, Ramp Feature, Auto Altitude adjustment, and Information technology (data tracking).

The Machine itself is very user friendly, with its fairly compact design and Smart Dial for sleep functions and data control. With its low cost and efficiency, the Icon is an ideal choice for anyone – and it even comes with some nifty features, like its alarm clock and music playing ability.

F&P Icon Auto CPAP Product Features

The Icon is equipped with various useful features to make your sleeping experience as comfortable as possible. Let’s look into those features in a little more detail…

Responsive Pressure Relief

SensAwake promotes better overall sleep. We all experience subconscious waking through the night – at which time pressure intolerance is likely to occur. Whereas other pressure relief technologies provide partial relief during expiration, SensAwake provides a prompt and significant relief in pressure to the lowest most comfortable level upon waking. This eases the return to sleep and allows effective treatment to resume.

More humidity. More comfort

F&P’s ThermoSmart Technology includes an advanced humidification algorithm and a heated breathing tube, which both work to provide optimal humidity and reduce condensation and maintain those conditions throughout the night, regardless of ambient temperature.

Information Technology

InfoSmart Web is a flexible management system which delivers multiple data transfer options that helps to efficiently manage and report on patient adherence in the most cost-effective way.

Auto Algorithm

The Icon uses an auto algorithm to check for problems like apneas and hypopneas for every breath you take during your night and respond to those changes by correspondingly adjusting the pressure.

Ramp Feature

The Ramp Feature starts the Icon CPAP machine’s air flow at a lower pressure than prescribed, to make sure the user can fall asleep comfortably. The length of time for the ramp is 20 minutes, and this feature is controlled using the SmartDial button.

Auto Altitude Adjustment

The machine automatically compensates for pressure changes at different altitudes – making it usable when traveling.

Icon Auto CPAP Compared With…

There are a lot of CPAP machines on the market but only a handful are worth thinking about purchasing.  Here is how the Icon compares with a couple of other notable machines.

Philips Respironics Dreamstation Auto CPAP

Long story short, the Icon Auto CPAP is inferior to the DreamStation. The Icon loses to the DreamStation in every major category except for price – the Icon Auto is nearly half the price of the DreamStation.  If you’re going for the best in the market and you’re willing to pay for quality, go for the DreamStation. If you’re on a tight budget and you need a machine that will do its job, go for the Icon.

ResMed AirSense 10

The AirSense 10 AutoSet by ResMed is similar to the Dreamstation – both of these machines are top of the line and have pretty similar specs and features.  And so, the same advice from above applies.

Somnetics Transcend Auto miniCPAP

The Transcend Auto CPAP is in a similar playing field to the Icon in terms of features and price. However, the Transcend is significantly smaller and lighter than the Icon, and slightly quieter – making it more suitable for those who travel often.

What CPAP Users are Saying About the ICON

Particularly enjoyed the “SensAwake” feature. I was not awakened by hissing mask or the tube popping off the mask. I hadn’t realized how often that happened in the night.
  – Gen K.

Obviously, there are several stages of sleep – and some, such as REM sleep, are closer to being ‘awake’ than asleep (F&P refers to this as “subconscious” waking). By automatically relieving pressure during these phases, the user is able to experience peaceful sleep without disruptions.

It looks like a clock, and is a clock! Most people would probably appreciate the MP3 feature which means you can wake up to your choice of music.
  – Sarah Y.

Okay, so the Icon isn’t the prettiest CPAP machine, but it looks and functions as an alarm clock. You can play your own music. It’s basically a really sophisticated alarm clock.

Last night was my first night with my new auto CPAP machine. It’s the Fisher Icon Auto CPAP. Today I was LOVING LIFE, so awake and alert 🙂
  – Adam R.

So some people really, really love this machine. Apparently it has the ability to make your love life more – what more could you ask for?

I have a F&P Icon… in my opinion, it’s a great machine. Very very quiet, compact, integrated humidifier, good data reporting from the unit itself, easy to adjust.
  – Brad D.

As we mentioned earlier in this post, the Icon has all the essential features of most CPAP machines. Although it isn’t super fancy, it has everything you need for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Final Thoughts

The Icon Auto CPAP Machine works. And it works well. Although it’s a clunky machine which lacks some luxury features that the Dreamstation Auto CPAP and AirSense 10 have, it’s got the essential features like Ramp feature, SensAwake, Auto Algorithm, etc.

If you want a low-cost machine that will do its job well, buy an Icon. Or, alternatively, you could check out the Transcend Auto miniCPAP too.
