Find Your Fit: A Guide to Finding the Best CPAP Chin Strap for You!

For sleep apnea patients, undergoing effective CPAP therapy is incredibly important. While CPAP machines have been shown to dramatically improve the quality of sleep users receive, many users find they still run into issues- like mask leakage and mouth breathing- that stop them from getting the high quality sleep they need. Likewise, certain additional CPAP supplies can be very useful and help optimize CPAP therapy for users. Among the most useful CPAP accessories: a CPAP chin strap. For certain CPAP users, a chin strap can significantly enhance their CPAP therapy and enable them to enjoy the benefits of their therapy to the fullest extent by resolving some common CPAP problems.

CPAP Chin Straps: What are They?

CPAP chin straps are flexible, adjustable pieces of fabric, often fitted with velcro, that are used in conjunction with CPAP therapy. Designed to hold a user’s mouth closed while using a CPAP machine, CPAP chin straps can help reduce or eliminate mask leaks. Chin straps are compatible with most standard nasal masks, nasal pillow masks, and headgear. Because full face masks engage both the mouth and nose, chin straps are incompatible with these masks.

** While effective when used with a CPAP machine, CPAP chin straps should not be used independently of CPAP therapy- doing so may result in inadequate airflow.

Why are They Used?

Chin straps are used to provide additional mask support for sleep apnea patients undergoing CPAP therapy. They make sure the CPAP mask is as secure as possible and that no air is leaking from it, thus ensuring CPAP therapy is as effective as it can be for CPAP users.

Chin straps are particularly useful in enhancing the user experience of mouth breathers (individuals that breathe primarily through their mouths during sleep). Undergoing CPAP therapy while consistently having an open mouth can result in a dry mouth or sore throat upon waking. To avoid the uncomfortable consequences of mouth breathing, many mouth breathers will elect to use a chin strap that closes their mouths while they undergo their therapy.

How do Chin Straps Work?

A chin strap is typically secured around the user’s lower jaw and the top of his/her head. This velcro design keeps the user’s mouth closed during his/her therapy and further secures the CPAP mask against his/her face.

Sounds Great! But How do I Know if a CPAP Chin Strap is Right for Me?

If you are a mouth breather or notice leaks from your CPAP mask while undergoing your therapy, a chin strap could be a great addition to your sleep apnea treatment plan! While mouth breathers can avoid dry mouth by using a full face mask, these masks aren’t always the best choice. Some CPAP users feel that a full face mask is claustrophobic or blocks their field of vision too much, impeding their ability to read books or watch TV with ease. For these users, a nasal/nasal pillow mask, coupled with a chin strap, is often a more desirable, yet equally effective, alternative.

While useful for appropriate users, CPAP chin straps may not be good for all CPAP users. It is recommended that you consult with your sleep doctor or specialist prior to trying out a CPAP chin strap so as to ensure it is safe for you to do so.

CPAP Mask Compatibility: Which chin straps work with which CPAP masks?

Making them even more convenient, CPAP chin straps are compatible with most standard nasal masks and nasal pillow masks; so, it’s likely you can use the mask you already have and don’t need to worry about purchasing a new one. Plus, an adjustable chin strap won’t interfere with CPAP headgear either. The adjustable design of chin straps enables CPAP users to fit the strap through their headgear with no problem!

CPAP Chin Strap Styles

The majority of chin straps feature a standard design: an adjustable strap made of flexible material (such as neoprene) and equipped with velcro fastener(s). Chin straps are worn around the top of the head and secured at the lower jaw. Some chin straps, like the Philips Respironics Premium Chin Strap, come equipped with an additional strap (for around the back of the head) that secures masks even further. A deluxe chin strap features a thicker band design; deluxe chin straps are a top choice among mouth breathers because of the extra support provided by the thick band.

In terms of sizing, most adjustable chin straps are one size fits all, as the adjustable strap enables users to fit it to the particular size they need. Not all chin straps are one size fits all though; nonadjustable chin straps, such as the Sunset Healthcare Solutions Ruby Style Chinstrap and the Lifesource Inc. Ruby Style Adjustable Chinstrap with Extension Strap, come in multiple sizes (S, M, L) and (Standard, Extra Large) respectively.

Chin straps are all about optimizing CPAP therapy. While most chin strap styles will work with your mask, it really comes down to choosing the style and size you find most comfortable!
